David Hobbs

“UPBEAT, PERSONABLE AND OFTEN HILARIOUS.”

British expatriate David Hobbs is no doubt one of the most entertaining personalities in motorsports, both as a driver and a commentator. The affable Hobbs had one of the most wide-ranging driving careers of anyone in the sport. He raced in Formula 1 for McLaren, Honda, and BRM; drove sports cars including at various times a Ford GT40, Ferrari 512M, Mirage, Porsche 917s 956s and 962s. He also raced in the IMSA Camel GT series for BMW, finished fifth in the Indy 500 for McLaren, won championships in Formula 5000 and Trans Am, and even led the Daytona 500 in a NASCAR stock car. He also made several appearances at Le Mans, finishing third on two occasions.

“David is upbeat, personable and often hilarious,” says racing commentator Bob Varsha who often shared the booth with Hobbs on Speed TV broadcasts. “His ability to address the human side of the sport, the physical and mental challenges, as well as the funny, frustrating, and sometimes tragic elements of racing life have made him a staple in American television from his first broadcast with CBS in the early 1970s through many years on Speed TV.”
Hobbs now has residences at Vero Beach, Florida and Elkhart Lake Wisconsin and owns a Honda dealership in the Milwaukee area. He will be front and center throughout the four days of the American Speed Festival at M1 Concourse in October 2021.
